DIFFICULTY

Moderate

Most of the hard work is making your way up to the start of the stairs, then ascending the stairs to the viewing platform. The walk down, is a lot quicker, but you still need to be careful as the cobblestone roads can be unlevel.

Enjoying the Back Streets of Puerto Vallarta

Winding your way to the start of the stairs, you’ll visit quiet cobblestone streets. The streets are steep, so wear good shoes with a non-slip sole. When I went it was about 30° C and very humid. Take water with you, and a hat for the sun.

Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.

The platform at the top of Puerto Vallarta’s Mirador de la Cruz , allows you to get spectacular 360-degree view of Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre mountains.

While the panoramic view of the sea will take your breath away, don’t forget to turn around for the best view of the mountain range that stretches to the horizon in Puerto Vallarta. You can’t always see the mountains or get an idea of how great they are, making this a spectacular view of the green mountains of Puerto Vallarta.

What to Expect

There was a bit of construction along the path, and some very big heavy duty equipment. The big earth movers along the narrow path made for an interesting walk up.

The cable car was not working. But hopefully these renovations might restore it.

From the Malecón, take Abasolo Street away from the beach and head towards upward toward the hill top behind the city. After a couple of blocks, turn left onto Emilio Carranza Street and then right onto Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez. Along the way, several hand-painted signs indicate how to get to Mirador de la Cruz. Soon you will reach a long set of white stairs that lead to the viewpoint and the best view of Puerto Vallarta.
