Local Japanese Restaurant, Yuji’s From Japan, is like a corner of Yokohama flavours in Vancouver
We’re lucky in Vancouver to have Yuji’s back, this time as Yuji’s From Japan, a small but popular japanese restaurant. Yokohama trained, with French Cuisine experience, Yuji’s delivers quality Japanese food, beautiful and fresh sashimi, and some innovative small plates.
Opened for less than a year, it’s been on my list to visit. I arrived just after the opening time, 5pm, and there were already four tables reserved in this small space. I’m more of a sushi bar person anyway, so that worked for me. For starters, I ordered Yuji’s Omakase Sashimi (for two $25). Omakase sashimi is my standard barometer for overall quality. The sashimi was very fresh and the Omakase was perfectly balanced in variety of textures and flavours, and beautifully presented.
Yuji’s menu has Daily Specials. I loved the innovative selection of local and seasonal offerings, like the Corn on the Cob Tempura! Again, fresh ingredients, sweet, and beautifully presented.
Yuji’s has a good selection of Japanese sake, Shochu and beers. I had the Koshihikari, for the first time, and it was great; balanced flavours, and a nice, clean finish. It went well with the food.
The Grilled Shio-Koji Chicken was prefect; a good sized, fresh, juicy, grilled piece of chicken, just cooked, and marinated with the rice koji mold. Very satisfying!
I also enjoyed a Dynamite Roll and the Tuna & Avocado Crepe roll, which to me initially sounded like a weird idea, but upon trying enjoyed the creaminess of the tuna and avocado, in the soft crepe, punctuated by roe. A tasty surprise!
Dinner for two was around $80. For the quality of food, it’s my new Japanese sushi 巻き寿司, 握り寿司 / sashimi 刺身 neighbourhood restaurant in Kits.
