Honolulu has a lot of hidden treasures, and The Sake Shop is one of them. I admit, when I visit Honolulu, I eat sashimi and I drink sake. I just associate a good sake selection with Honolulu Japanese restaurants. The Sake Shop (on South King Street) is Hawaii’s first retail shop devoted to sake. They’ve been open since 2010, and this was my first visit.
So when I sample some premium sake at dinner, and scribble the name as best I can on a napkin, and walk into the Sake Shop to ask if they might have it, they really might because they stock nearly 150 varieties of Japanese premium Sakes, from bottles of Ginjo and Daiginjo to pop-sized cans of Kikusui.
Did they have the super premium gold labelled Tama no Hikari Daiginjo I was looking for? Yes they did! I also got some very personal and detailed information on a few other sakes and had to grab those too (Hoyo Kura No Hana and Mizbasho Ginjo). It’s always special to find someone who knows about their merchandise! They know the distillers, they know the nuances of geography and regions, they know sake!
They also put on some cool sake tasting events. It’s obviously a labour of love for this family run business. If you’re into enjoying a sip of premium sake, and in Honolulu, drop by you’ll be a happy you did.
