The Powell Street Festival is an annual celebration of Japanese Canadian arts, culture and heritage that features something for everyone: dance, music, film and video, visual arts, martial arts demos, amateur sumo tournament, craft vendors, traditional displays, and of course, tons of scrumptious Japanese food.
PSF is the largest event of its kind in Canada and the longest running community arts festival in the Lower Mainland. We provide a much-needed venue for emerging and established, professional and amateur, and traditional and contemporary artists in the Japanese Canadian and Asian Canadian communities.
THEME FOR 2014: ROOTS
In 2014, PSFS presents “Roots,” a presentation of artists who either have a strong grounding in the greater artistic community or are laying the foundations of a new vision. The theme Roots intones an exploration of history and culture, tracing the lineage of influences and variable pathways. This year’s series provides a look into the importance of being rooted in cultural history and how that relevance plays out, whether it be an embrace of tradition, or a break away. We present artists who redefine cultural and disciplinary specificity, and explore the complex rhizome of Japanese Canadian and Asian Canadian identity.
