Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and Park, Vancouver

The thing I love about this beautiful garden, is that it is easily accessible from Downtown, and an interesting walk through Gastown from Canada Place.

It is a popular attraction, because of the architectural beauty and because of the landscaping which changes with the seasons. It’s proximity to Chinatown also makes it a great way to enjoy the day and have a great meal in Chinatown.

Vancouver’s Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden was built in 1985-1986 using principles and techniques from of the original Ming dynasty garden. Fifty-two master craftsmen from Suzhou China, working with Canadian counterparts, completed this landscape masterpiece within a year. The intricate halls and walkways are constructed with precise joinery and without the use of nails, screws or glue. The Garden opened on April 24, 1986. All the materials used in the garden came from China—even the little pebbles

There are free guided tours available with admission, offering information on the culture, history and significance of the Garden. Tour frequency depends on the season. Tour guides are quite knowledgeable.

The Garden is open most days 10am-4:30pm/6:00pm (But not Mondays Nov-Apr)

The Garden Presents Public Events Throughout the Year

If you’re around on February 17, 2013, the Garden is hosting a Chinese New Year – Year of the Snake Temple Fair. Visit the Garden to celebrate happy blessings for the new year!

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park

The Adjacent Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park, is an extension of the Garden, but it is a  Free Public Vancouver City Park. It is a nice quiet place to visit, and free.  It was made by the Parks Board, with modern techniques using North American materials.
