Vancouver Chinatown Still Satisfies Traditional to Trendy Food Hunger

Vancouver’s Chinatown Can Still Deliver Some Great Food

If you read the list of winners from the Vancouver Chinese Restaurant Awards 2013 its hard to find a restaurant outside Richmond.  Fair enough, there are great traditional and fine Chinese restaurants in Richmond.  But Vancouver Chinatown still has a few gems.

Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie

If you’re looking for innovation and edge, Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie is a darling, but not traditional for sure.  Its a trendy, think 1880’s Shanghai, and sports a tasty tapas style menu with a list of excellent cocktails. And they don’t take reservations.

Hon’s Wun-Tun House

Chinatown also offers good reasonably priced food. I like Hons Wun-Tun House whether warming up with a morning congee, or a casual dinner of their own fresh made fried egg noodle, ramen, udon, or rice noodles.  Their potstickers’s are very good too.

New Town Bakery and Restaurant

If you’re looking for buns…I like New Town Bakery and Restaurant, always a crowd pleaser. The uniqueness is that in addition to Chinese buns it also has filipino baked goods, so if you’re for a nice Steamed Pork Bun and a Siopao or a Asado Pork bun, you can satisfy all your wishes at one place. I have more of a take-away relationship with New Town, but some TV programs have had sit down meals here.  This is making me hungry just thinking about, and I just spent the day eating in Chinatown today!

Floata Seafood Restaurant

If you’re after a big banquet style, dim sum cart experience in Vancouver Chinatown, the best place to try is 1,000-seat Floata Seafood Restaurant. They’re usually open pretty early on Chinese New Year Parade day, and don’t forget to bring a some red  hóngbāo envelope with a few lucky coins for your servers!
