The Fairmont San Francisco in the Heart of the City by the Bay
I once lived in San Francisco, for eight years. As a San Franciscan, we acknowledge that the city is aesthetically blessed, temperately favoured, culturally magnetic, and even earthquake sensitive, and also that The Fairmont San Francisco atop Nob Hill is treasured, loved, and a significant landmark in San Francisco.
The Fairmont San Francisco is ideally situated in the heart of the city. The San Francisco Cable Car picks up and drops off right at the top of the hill in front of the Fairmont San Francisco. Everything is nearby, North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s ideal for shopping and for business. We really enjoyed walking up and down the hills but remember to bring some good walking shoes.
Stay in for a drink. The Fairmont San Francisco’s own Honey Saison Beer is crafted with their own honey from beehives on the roof. Refreshingly offered on draft in the Laurel Court Restaurant & Bar, and much enjoyed after a long walk up and down the streets of San Francisco.
Sophisticated and Elegant Renovation
The Fairmont San Francisco Hotel was elegantly renovated costing $21 million in 2014, so now is a great time to visit! The Tower Building guest rooms offer stunning views of the city, combined with a neutral color palette of warm taupe and cream lacquer accents of bright silver. Each room features stylish seating designed with a crown-shaped back, reminding guests that The Fairmont San Francisco sits proudly atop Nob Hill.
Did I mention I happened to be there, up, way up on the 16th floor of the tower on the night of the big-ish 6.0 earthquake on August 24th 2014, sometime around 3am the Tower gave a gentle sway, things did a little clink and creak sound, for some 50 seconds while I held my breath. Once a San Franciscan, always a San Franciscan. I was in Berkeley during very damaging 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Knowing that solid ground is the best ground during an earthquake, this time I had some comfort, even high about the highest hill in San Francisco, the Fairmont San Francisco is charmed, and it sits on bedrock. This is one hotel stay I will never forget, in a good way!
And if it’s safe enough for every president since Truman, it’s safe enough for me!
‘Every president since Truman has bedded down within the its hallowed halls, which are adorned in celebrated photographs that bespeak the hotel’s storied history by the decade.’

Tribute to Tony Bennett
The loveliness of Paris seems somehow sadly gay
The glory that was Rome is of another day
I’ve been terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan
I’m going home to my city by the bay
I left my heart in San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me
To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars
The morning fog may chill the air, I don’t care
My love waits there in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco
Your golden sun will shine for me
Tony Bennett – I Left My Heart In San Francisco Lyrics
Songwriters Cory, George, Jr C / Cross, Douglass 1953
In December 1961, in the famous “Venetian Room” at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, Tony Bennett first sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. In the audience that night were San Francisco mayor George Christopher and future mayor Joseph L. Alioto. From the 1960s through the 1980s, at San Francisco’s premier supper club the “Venetian Room,” Bennett sang the city song. (Wikipedia)
Getting There / Getting Around
Walk. You don’t need a car downtown. Parking is expensive, anywhere around $64 a day. We took BART from SFO to downtown. Then we took a cab from Market Street to the hotel because of our bags we did not want to lug up Nob Hill! But we really enjoyed walking up and down the hills to North Beach, and Union Square, and even Fisherman’s Wharf. The other delightful option is the San Francisco Cable Car, which picks up and drops off right at the top of the hill in front of the Fairmont San Francisco.
